Williams Reflect on Difficult Barcelona Weekend, Eye Recovery in Canada
Williams drivers Carlos Sainz and Alexander Albon have expressed the team's determination to regain competitiveness following a challenging Spanish Grand Prix weekend. The Grove-based squad had anticipated difficulties at the Circuit de Barcelona-Catalunya, a track layout that has historically exposed the limitations of their car package.
The low expectations proved accurate, with neither driver progressing beyond the second phase of qualifying. The race itself compounded the team's struggles. Alexander Albon endured multiple incidents, first contact at the start requiring a front wing change, followed by a collision with Liam Lawson that resulted in further damage and a ten-second penalty before he ultimately retired from the race.
Carlos Sainz also sustained front wing damage on the opening lap. Although he opted not to pit for repairs, the compromised aerodynamics significantly impacted his performance throughout the event. Despite finishing his home race, Sainz failed to score points, ending a consistent run of points finishes in Barcelona since his Formula 1 debut.
Looking ahead to the upcoming Canadian Grand Prix in Montreal, both drivers conveyed a renewed sense of purpose. Albon acknowledged the suboptimal conclusion to the recent triple-header but stated the team was resolved to 'come back fighting'. He highlighted the Circuit Gilles Villeneuve as a venue offering opportunities for overtaking, drawing on positive memories from previous races there. He also noted the team's adaptability in various weather conditions experienced this season, suggesting they are well-placed to handle Montreal's often unpredictable environment.
Carlos Sainz echoed the sentiment of looking forward to Canada. Despite a busy period concluding with Barcelona and a roadshow event in Madrid, he felt prepared for the Montreal challenge. He described the Canadian track as enjoyable with ample chances for overtaking and acknowledged the significant role weather frequently plays. Sainz is eager to see what the FW47 can achieve on this circuit and emphasised the plan to maximise every opportunity throughout the weekend.
The team is clearly focused on putting the difficult Barcelona outing behind them and aims for a stronger showing in Canada, a circuit that could potentially suit their car characteristics better or offer variables like weather to capitalise on.
