Mattia Binotto Expresses Growing Confidence in Audi's Formula 1 Project

Former Ferrari team principal Mattia Binotto has shared insights into his role and perspective on Audi's preparations to enter Formula 1 as a works team, expressing increasing conviction in the project's potential. Binotto joined the Hinwil-based Sauber outfit, which is set to be rebranded as Audi for the 2026 season, in an expanded capacity encompassing Chief Operating Officer and Chief Technical Officer roles. His responsibilities involve overseeing technical development efforts across Audi's key facilities, including the existing base in Hinwil, the power unit development centre in Neuburg an der Donau, and a planned future technical hub in England. Working alongside newly appointed Team Principal Jonathan Wheatley, formerly of Red Bull Racing, Binotto detailed a clear division of responsibilities. While Wheatley focuses on managing the operational aspects of race weekends and the day-to-day running of the team during the season, Binotto is primarily focused on the organizational structure and technical development. This division allows the team to build its foundation effectively from what Binotto described as a 'blank sheet of paper', aiming for a potentially different structure compared to established outfits. Reflecting on the progress made, Binotto stated his growing belief in Audi's commitment. He highlighted being drawn to the brand's motorsport heritage and, crucially, Audi's evident desire to succeed and the energy being invested into building the F1 organisation. Despite broader challenges facing the automotive industry, Binotto is confident in Audi's long-term vision and determination to achieve its goals by 2030. Looking ahead to the current season for the Sauber team under its present guise, Binotto outlined pragmatic targets. The focus is less on achieving a specific position in the Constructors' Championship and more on demonstrating consistent growth and fighting for points in every race. Finding greater consistency in results is seen as a vital step and a key objective for the team as it continues its transition towards becoming the Audi works entry in 2026. This period is viewed as crucial for building capabilities and refining processes ahead of the significant regulation changes.
