Ogier Claims Record Fifth Sardegna Victory in Thrilling WRC Battle
While the Formula 1 world anticipates its next Grand Prix, the FIA World Rally Championship delivered intense action at Rally Italia Sardegna. Toyota driver Sébastien Ogier secured a record fifth victory at the demanding gravel event, overcoming challenging conditions and fierce competition.
Set around the port city of Olbia, the rally tested crews over four days and 16 special stages, covering nearly 320 kilometres of technical terrain. Drivers battled soaring temperatures exceeding 30 degrees Celsius and unpredictable hazards, including blinding dust and treacherous loose surfaces transitioning between high-speed stretches and jagged rocks.
Ogier’s triumph came after a tight battle with Hyundai’s Ott Tänak. The eight-time WRC champion ultimately edged out the 2019 titleholder by a mere 7.9 seconds to claim the top spot. This marks Ogier's third victory from just four rallies contested so far in the 2025 season, underlining his formidable form.
Two-time champion Kalle Rovanperä completed the podium positions. Rovanperä also showcased strong form late in the event, securing wins on both Super Sunday and the crucial Power Stage with a stellar final stage effort.
The result significantly impacts the championship standings. Ogier has reduced the deficit to points leader Elfyn Evans, moving from 30 points behind to 19. Evans finished fourth in Sardinia, unable to match the pace of the front-runners, but his position was sufficient to retain his overall championship lead.
Reigning world champion Thierry Neuville had a difficult weekend, scoring only five points and consequently falling 50 points adrift in the title race.
The WRC calendar now looks ahead to Round 7, the EKO Acropolis Rally Greece. Known as the “Rally of the Gods,” the event is scheduled to run from June 26 to 29 around the city of Lamia, promising another stern test on challenging gravel roads.
