Sauber Delivers Strongest Showing Yet After Spanish GP Upgrades
Sauber enjoyed their most competitive weekend of the 2025 Formula 1 season at the recent Spanish Grand Prix, demonstrating a significant step forward in performance following the introduction of a comprehensive upgrade package.
The Hinwil-based squad, which has faced challenges in recent seasons, showed promising pace throughout the Barcelona event. Gabriel Bortoleto impressed in Saturday qualifying, securing a commendable 12th position on the grid. While teammate Nico Hulkenberg had a less straightforward qualifying session, starting from 15th, he executed a superb race drive.
Hulkenberg made an excellent start, quickly gaining positions to run within the top 10. He maintained strong pace throughout the Grand Prix, appearing poised to score valuable championship points. The late-race Safety Car period provided an opportunity he expertly seized, utilizing a strategic advantage from saving soft tyres. He managed to overtake competitors, notably clearing Isack Hadjar's Racing Bulls and Lewis Hamilton's Ferrari down the main straight. Hulkenberg crossed the finish line in sixth place, which was subsequently promoted to fifth following a time penalty applied to Max Verstappen.
This upturn in form is attributed to a series of significant car updates debuted at the Circuit de Barcelona-Catalunya. Sauber's C45 featured a heavily revised floor, incorporating changes to the fences, floor edges, and diffuser. Alongside the floor modifications, a new engine cover was introduced, with adjustments made to the sidepod profile to optimize airflow interaction with the underbody. Furthermore, a new front wing design, featuring revised end plates, aimed to improve outboard performance and downstream flow quality. Team personnel confirmed that the upgrades delivered the expected performance step, contributing directly to the improved pace and result.
The strong result marks a positive turning point for Sauber, highlighting the effectiveness of their development program. As the team prepares to transition into the Audi factory entry in 2026, demonstrating the ability to understand and improve their current machinery is crucial for building momentum and confidence for the future.
