Pirelli Continues 2026 Tyre Development with Mercedes and Red Bull Test
Formula 1's sole tyre supplier, Pirelli, has conducted another crucial test session focused on the development of the 2026 generation tyres. Following the Spanish Grand Prix weekend, Mercedes and Red Bull, along with drivers utilizing a Racing Bulls car, remained at the Circuit de Barcelona-Catalunya for a two-day programme.
The test saw George Russell representing Mercedes on the first day, with Andrea Kimi Antonelli taking over driving duties for the second. Red Bull's test programme involved Isack Hadjar and Liam Lawson sharing driving responsibilities in a Racing Bulls chassis on day one, before Yuki Tsunoda participated on the second day. This diverse driver line-up provided valuable feedback across various skill sets and experiences.
The primary objective of the Barcelona test was to evaluate different constructions and solutions for the hardest compounds in the forthcoming 2026 tyre range. Barcelona's challenging layout, known for its demanding corners and high-energy loads on the tyres, provides an ideal environment to push these harder specifications and gather robust data. The second day alone saw a significant workload, with both Antonelli and Tsunoda completing 150 laps each, contributing a total of 300 laps towards the development effort.
According to Pirelli's Motorsport Director, the ongoing testing programme is entering a decisive phase. Key deadlines for the 2026 tyres are fast approaching, with the construction specifications due for homologation by September 1st. Development work on the compounds will continue until a later deadline of December 1st. The data collected from demanding circuits like Barcelona is crucial for verifying designs and solutions as these deadlines draw nearer.
The tyre manufacturer expressed gratitude to the participating teams and drivers for their commitment, acknowledging the logistical challenge of extending their stay immediately after a demanding triple-header race sequence. The 2026 tyre development journey is set to continue with further tests scheduled. The next session is planned for June 19th and 20th at the Fiorano circuit, where Ferrari will assist in testing wet weather prototype tyres. Following that, another dry weather test is scheduled for Silverstone in July, after the British Grand Prix.
